In early May of 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to the stunning South Island of New Zealand for a 5-day adventure alongside Bruce Hunnicutt and JR Hossack. Meeting up at Christchurch Airport, we embarked on a road trip south to our outfitter’s lodge—a perfect starting point for what would become an unforgettable hunting expedition.
From our base, we set out on foot to conquer the rugged, majestic mountains that New Zealand is known for. The beauty of the South Island was nothing short of breathtaking, with towering peaks, lush valleys, and crisp alpine air. Additionally, we were fortunate to experience helicopter-assisted hunts, which provided unparalleled access to remote locations and stunning mountain landscapes.
Hunting Adventures
Bruce Hunnicutt showcased his skills by taking some impressive fallow deer and chamois during our time in the wilderness. The challenging terrain and unpredictable weather added an extra layer of excitement to every stalk and shot. JR Hossack also had an incredible hunt, successfully harvesting a magnificent tahr—an experience that left him with a trophy to cherish for a lifetime.
Each hunt required a blend of strategy, patience, and physical endurance. The South Island’s rugged landscape demanded utmost respect for the environment and careful planning. From navigating steep slopes to quietly approaching game, every moment was an adventure in itself.
Helicopter-Assisted Hunting
One of the highlights of the trip was the use of helicopters to access some of the most remote mountain peaks. These breathtaking aerial views and swift transport allowed us to reach areas otherwise inaccessible by foot alone. The ability to reach these remote locations made the hunt truly unique, offering a sense of exploration and accomplishment that’s hard to match.
The Next Adventure
As we wrapped up our New Zealand adventure, talk quickly turned to future hunts. With plans potentially leading us to Australia in 2025 or 2026, it’s clear that the adventure doesn’t stop here. The thrill of the hunt and camaraderie with fellow hunters like Bruce and JR ensures that new memories are always on the horizon.
Whether it’s chasing big game in the rugged Australian outback or exploring another untamed destination, the experiences we’ve shared will continue to fuel our passion for the outdoors.
